Step Right Up...

Today is an open forum! What questions would you like to see addressed in future S.C. posts? How can we be more brilliant, witty, amazing?

Scratch that. How can I be more brilliant, witty, and amazing? (The other S.C.'s have already topped out the brilliant, witty, and amazing scale...)

  1. I'm so glad you posted this! There are times I think of questions but don't want to bombard you guys! I have a million questions but ofcourse now I'm having brain freeze, ugh... I'll try to remember some of them
    1. What do editors really do to your manuscript? What kinds of things do they change?Do they change things drastically so the story isn't even the same?

    2. When you write do you ever get stuck with two directions to the story? If so what do you do? Sometiems I think of more than one way things can go, should I write both?

  2. BJ, you may have to leave this question out for a day or two for those of us recovering from a long weekend!

My one comment is that I love how easily and comfortably you discuss your faith in regards to you as a writer and a person. You do so in such a wonderfully refreshing and unassuming way.

    Thanks~ cat

  4. I always have questions for y'all, but now that you asked I can't think of any! I'll try and come up with some...

Is it possible to publish a book without a contract? Like, a one time deal?

For fiction, how much can you make up while still keeping it real? if your story is set in a certain town, would it be ok to make up stores and streets even if they don't really exist? or is that going too far?

Is it hard being a full-time writer? Do you struggle a lot with having enough money?

Is it ever ok to just skip the research and wing it? Currently, I'm working on a book that's set in a hospital and so far I've been very vague about the reality of a hospital because I just don't know what's it like. The main things I got right, but some of the little details I just skipped. Is that ok?

Ok, I won't ask you anymore questions! Thanks for giving us a chance to ask away!

  5. Some of you say you don't outline when you write a book. Do you make notes about characters beforehand? Do you literally just have an idea and free write?

  6. Do you have any query letter advice? Or, if you're feeling really generous, a critique from your brilliant minds? :-D
