And not being able to use certain phrases or expressions that weren't invented yet? I could imagine that could get super tricky. I don't write historical though so I'm not entirely sure. Anyone else want to chime in here?Betsy St. Amanthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01326874709264159191noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839097860063281306.post-34264733500302635572013-09-19T11:08:29.893-07:002013-09-19T11:08:29.893-07:00Well, I noticed most historical fiction authors de...Well, I noticed most historical fiction authors describe everything the same way. The factors of emotion and dialogue are all very similar. Some of it seems "stiff", as if the rules are always in the back of the author's mind. You can almost expect what is going to happen because of the overall voice. Does that make sense? Basically, I am trying to incorporate your advice about writing with a modern feel with still trying to be distinct. :)Alicia Willishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11850670601744580160noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839097860063281306.post-5504164222533558162013-09-19T10:11:11.645-07:002013-09-19T10:11:11.645-07:00Alicia, I think that depends on a lot of factors. ...Alicia, I think that depends on a lot of factors. I'd say yes and no. It can easily happen within authors in the same house in the same genre...but most publishers I've come across don't have a lot of rules at all. My Love Inspired novels require a little bit more consistency and rules than other houses, but my experiences with my two other publishers wasn't like that at all (and I don't even find the LI novels to be too constricting once you realize what they're looking for and want to write for that market. It's not for everybody! But they do so well so I've enjoyed my time there).

Can you be more specific in what you mean? Are you talking about plot lines or the author's voice or what? :) This is a great discussion!Betsy St. Amanthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01326874709264159191noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839097860063281306.post-54169281878021312532013-09-18T20:47:16.388-07:002013-09-18T20:47:16.388-07:00I did have one thing I wanted to ask. It is just something I've been noticing and wondering about. Any thoughts?Alicia Willishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11850670601744580160noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839097860063281306.post-16811901123814269622013-09-18T12:14:40.663-07:002013-09-18T12:14:40.663-07:00Thank you, Betsy!
